Starting a career in audio: the big list of resources

When you’re trying to get started working in radio and podcast production, building your skills is just one piece of the puzzle. Understanding how the industry works, finding job postings, networking with new people, and navigating the worlds of freelancing and employment are also a huge part of it.

There are lots of projects and communities out there which exist to try to help people find their way in the industry, beyond what we do at Multitrack. We’ve compiled a list here to help you find your feet in this industry. We’ll keep expanding this list over time, so please get in touch if you can think of a useful resource we should add.

  • Rise & Shine - “An audio maker community set up in 2019 to help open the door of the audio industry to everyone, regardless of income.” The initiative is run by the producer Sarah Myles. Rise & Shine organises talks, panels and meet ups. They also have a podcast and a large archive of videos on YouTube with recordings of many previous talks.

  • Sound Money - newsletter by Em Kwenortey about money and audio. She anonymously interviews audio producers about what they earn, and their experiences navigating pay and jobs in the radio and podcast industry.

  • Entry Level Audio Network (ELAN) - a network for anyone in the first stages of their UK audio career. They offer UK wide meet-ups and online networking. As well as the main Facebook page they also have a Twitter feed.

  • UK Audio Network (UKAN) - Google Group for members of the UK audio industry to post job opportunities and discuss relevant topics.

  • Sounds in Colour - an audio network for people of colour in the UK. Connect with the group at soundsincolour[at]googlegroups.com.

  • The-Dots - online network featuring job postings in creative fields including audio.

  • A New Direction - London-based non-profit offering mentoring to young people interested in creative careers, including audio.

  • Audio UK Members Directory - this list of members of the trade body Audio UK offers a non-exhaustive but pretty handy list of UK audio production companies.

  • Training videos from PRX - PRX is a US based audio organisation, and these videos include advice on both the creative and professional aspects of making audio.
